Livanova: Lifesaving Products

Ever hear of a Heart/Lung Machine? Consider yourself lucky. In the most complicated surgeries, the functions of the heart and lungs are handled by one machine. That’s right: Your heart can be stopped and lungs can be non-functioning. This thing keeps you alive when your options are slim. Now, product photography isn’t exactly my main thing, but for the right client, I’m all in.      Ably Assisted by assistant Andrew Cope, these sales model machines were, of course, grubby, […]

Robotic Surgery at Good Sam

Robotic surgery sounds otherworldly, but it’s actually becoming somewhat commonplace. Certain procedures, like prostate surgery, have seen the benefits of smaller incisions, less blood loss, and reduced healing times. To share their stories of excellent patient outcomes, Intermountain Health brought me in for a day. To make the procedures look believable, we sterilized various clients’ limbs. Always a good time to have your leg wrapped in orange bacteria-killing plastic for an hour. Interestingly, in some cases, the surgeon is a […]

Location Portraits 2023

One of my great pleasures in photography is making portraits on location. It combines all the technical with all the personal: Getting a little glimpse and someone’s personality, in physical context.  They take a little longer than regular headshots on seamless, but tell a completely different story. Consider them for your next branding update! See more location portraits here.

Case Study: New Business Portraits

I hope this is obvious. Here’s the website of a client who just redid their business portraits. Which one do YOU think looks better?

Editorial on a Big Day

March 5 with the first day of vaccine availability for agricultural workers, and JBS Foods in Greeley has 3500 of them under their roof! How to handle that many vaccinations? Do them in-house. With military precision, JBS managed to bring the vaccinations to their employees at work. The plant was closed, they got a paid day off, were given a specific time for their first shot. Reps and nurses from Kaiser, HealthOne, Centura and others were on-hand to administer. It […]

Do You See What I See?

Why, why, WHY do we sometimes see different things on our monitors? Occasionally I hear about image brightness or color. Surprisingly though, not too often. When I edit an image, do you see it the same way I did? Depends. Computer monitors, like almost anything else in the world of tech (thermostats, tire inflators, your Subaru’s speedometer), need to be calibrated to be consistent. What does that mean? Calibration means setting up a device to a specific set of standards. […]

Is Your Photographer Insured?

You make sure the gardener, cable guy, plumber, and roofer are insured, right? Often trade licensing carries a liability insurance requirement, but photography does not. You should still require it. Liability means that if the photographer, or any other contractor working on your property, breaks something or hurts someone, they will be responsible for it, not you or your company. Altitude Arts carries $2 million in liability, plus other additional coverage. Here’s a standard “Acord” certificate. Once you confirm that […]

Outdoor Business Portraits

Well, this has been an interesting year. And the business portrait train did not stop, it merely sat in the station for a couple months. But it’s chugging along again, and safely. One of my clients has me come to their various offices (dozens around the Denver metro area) to do head-and-shoulders “headshots” of their new employees. We’ve always done these in an office setting: Behind them you see a bit of out-of-focus window or plant. Something architectural, maybe a […]

Gotcha Covered: How Altitude Arts Backs Up Our Work

Stop worrying. That’s my gig. Nobody thinks more about lost files more than me. And that should give you peace of mind! That and the fact that Altitude Arts’s backup system is battle-tested. Here’s why your files are safe: Every shoot, as it’s put onto my editing computer, immediately starts backing itself up both locally and in the cloud. Just copying the files onto my machine puts them in five—FIVE—places: Two cards in the camera My editing machine My local […]

Perfect Practice III

This week, I had the pleasure of working with the hippest doctor’s office I’ve ever seen, Hälsa Dental in Wheat Ridge. Hälsa means health in Swedish, the heritage of its founder Lauren Peterson, DMD. How hip are they? They have their own Spotify playlist. The challenge was to add to their website’s already excellent photography with updated portraits, a team shot, and some more details of the office. The office is filled with floor-to-ceiling windows, colorful Swedish furniture, and the […]

Von’s Vision

The great Bronco Von Miller stopped by 34 Left studios the other day, to tape a PSA about Glaucoma. Sponsored by Allergan, who make powerful Glaucoma medication, the future Hall-of-Famer hit his marks, nailed his lines, and spent the last half hour with me shooting stills. The video is about knowing the risks of Glaucoma, and seeking treatment if you think you or someone in your family may be affected. The New York production company, MultiVu, built a beautiful bright […]

Back on the Road

Meet Scott. Scott’s a bicycling nut, and rides daily to his software engineering job. Well, on one particular commute, he was involved in a rather nasty meeting with a very large car. He ended up at my client’s hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, who patched him up and started him on his year-long journey of recovery. Although he doesn’t remember much of his time there, he and the folks at Good Sam have stayed in touch. Some months […]

Architectural Exteriors

A few months ago, we made a handful of new architectural exteriors for a great client, UC Health. They had a lot of locations to photograph, but I was honored to be the one selected to shoot the main campus in Aurora. The buildings change regularly, as does the signage. Although our shoot there a few years ago was a rousing success, enough had changed that the marketing people felt they were due for another shoot. Architectural exteriors are funny. […]

Perfect Practice II

Dr. Smith is a brilliant surgeon. He can fix up your hands chin, eyes, neck. Pretty much anything that makes us look or feel a little older than we actually are! Wisely, his marketing consultant decided to make a new round of photos of happy clients, and even the even one of good doctor himself. If your practice could use a makeover, give me a call. I’m happy to work with offices big and small on print, advertising, and web […]

Recruitment Campaign

One of my favorite clients, SCL Health, has a department solely dedicated to attracting new talent. In the competitive world of healthcare, this is where the rubber meets the road. They have set up a specific website just for recruiting, and wanted to populate it with actual SCL doctors and leaders, feeling, rightly, that using stock photos would be exactly the wrong thing to do. The images needed to be beautiful, compelling, and authentic. Here are the actual people you’ll […]

Editorial: Tiny House, Tiny Baby

Recently I had the privilege of photographing Jen, Michael, and Scout for Good Health magazine, published by SCL Health. They had just relocated to Longmont and taken up in a tiny house. One of those adorable 400-square-footers you see on TV. New state, new home. Everything according to plan. Until baby Scout came along about 7 weeks earlier than expected! After a succesful birth, some state-of-the-art care at Good Samaritan Medical Center, and a little time in the NICU (preemie […]

How Do I Save My Pictures?

Good question. Our new system is cool and fast, but those little CDs that used to come in the mail (a week later)? Well, you probably won’t miss them. So here’s a step-by-step guide to saving and backing up your shoot. Enter your final shoot (not proofs) URL and password. Note the download button. Click “Download” then “Select All” That’s it! They’re on their way to wherever your downloads go. You can download individual files as well—Just select them one at […]

New: Instant Digital Delivery

I made it my mission this summer to get my photo files delivered in the fastest, most client-friendly way possible! I wanted the process to be interactive, and for you to get your final files fast, even when hundreds of proofs and final hi-res photos are involved. No more snail-mailing CDs! After a ton of research and beta testing, I chose my new delivery system—Photoshelter, which acts as a one-stop interface for sharing media. What this means for you: You’ll get […]

20/20 Lasik

Always a pleasure to see Dr. Mark Danzo of 20/20 Lasik. He and his team are always up for whatever marketing challenges are thrown at them, and darn it, they’re not so bad to look at either. This month, I did a series of them individually, offset on a bright white background. Their marketing people will be slugging graphics and Q&A in those bare fields, and running them in-office. By the way, if you hate your glasses, tell Dr. D. […]

360º QTVR

What’s 360º QTVR? QuickTime Virtual Reality, in a full circle. And if you’re on the product team at Sorin NA, making cannulae for heart surgeries, you know they come in all shapes and sizes. But how to demonstrate that to your customers: surgeons? With the assistance of the technologically masterful James Dewhirst, we turned high-resolution photos, in series of 36, into fully interactive animations for over a dozen products. James and I are pretty sure we’ve saved hundreds of lives.

CU Health Web Overhaul

This month, I had the pleasure of working with Taylor Carpenter of Carpenter Design on a ground-up web redesign for the Health & Wellness Center at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. As far as Taylor and I are concerned, a cohesive design and photography plan is the only way to totally redo a web site. The visual consistency, the uniform style, and the happy lack of stock imagery are all keys to a successful update. Our shot list, planned over several […]

10-Foot Prints

You heard that right. My biggest client, SCL Health in Denver, had a birthday party at one of their hospitals a couple weeks ago. Good Samaritan, in Lafayette, was born 10 years ago! To celebrate, they designed a massive mural along one of their atrium walls featuring the founding of the city, the building of the hospital, and photos of some of the services they provide. My photos! Managed and designed by Lynn Noonan of Zoop Creative, this huge undertaking […]

Enough Confetti, Already!

For the 140th Anniversary of St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Exempla Healthcare wanted to make a splash in the daily papers. They commissioned several images for their 8-page  Business Journal slick insert that day, but the cover was the most fun to create. The challenge was to show a colorful celebration amidst construction of their new, state-of-the-art hospital building. The designer cobbled together stock shots of models, confetti, construction, etc., until this concept was born. “Keep the cranes in!” were my […]

HDR For Architecture

What the heck is HDR and why do you care?   If you require architectural photography, whether interiors or exteriors, you need to know about HDR. High Dynamic Range photography combines several captures, usually 3 to 7, of an identical room or building made at different exposures. Special software (Not Photoshop!) combines them to brighten the darkest parts and darken the brightest to deliver a stunning, snappy, highly-saturated final image. The above is a good example, which also includes perspective correction. […]

Your Office as Studio

I’m often asked what’s the best space in an office for a corporate photo shoot. I’m always tempted by the Board Room due to sheer square footage, but actually, there’s probably a better space. Unless you’re willing to move that table. Above is an empty corner office. 8-foot ceilings (higher is nice, but not necessary) and approximately 400+ square feet (18′ x 25′). Luxury.  Below is about the minimum, 300 square feet (or 15′ x 20′) with a couple outlets. […]

Rock On

One of my healthcare clients is sponsoring a big, high-profile outdoor concert series at a local performing arts center. The challenge? Tie live music in with community healthcare. I think my client, Justin Fales at Exempla Lutheran, nailed it. Composite by designer Zander Renault.

Stealth

The Exempla Healthcare system has always been a great client. Their needs range from simple business portraits to full-blown complex and expensive advertising shoots. This week was on the more intimate side, but the hero was a machine. It’s called a Medtronic Stealth, and it combines X-rays, CT scans and live video from inside your body to precisely guide the neurosurgery being performed. Oh, and it’s the first one in the state. Totally worth dressing up in the bunny suit for.

Back to School

Tough to beat a good, solid high-tech industrial shoot. That’s exactly what we had on our hands, copywriter/producer JoEllen Hodges and I, this week at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center. In the only local pilot project of its kind, they have started a school for pharmacy education in-house, on the hospital campus. The ASHP-certified Pharmacy Technician Academy allows individuals to train for a career as a certified pharmacy technician – one of the fastest growing occupations today. The Academy’s goal is […]
